Works with Dag Rebeyrol on intaglio printing techniques.
Publication of Harald Sverdrup / Frans Widerberg Øyeblikk (Moments): A suite of 12 colour etchings plus title page.

Retrospective exhibition, organised by the University Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, opens at the Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, from 6 December to 11 January, during the Edinburgh International Festival. Nicolaus Widerberg: Sculpture, Frans Widerberg: Paintings, Thomas Widerberg: Music,  Kunstnerforbundet, from 8 March – 1 April.

 

1987

Retrospective exhibition, tours to the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle University, from 25 March – 16 April; Brighton Polytechnic Gallery from 1 – 27 May; Morley Gallery, Morley College, London, from 4 – 19 June; the Nordic House, Reykjavik, Iceland, from 8 – 30 August; The Gallery Downstairs, Burnley, from 28 September – 24 October; Arts Council Gallery, Belfast, N Ireland, from 4 – 28 November. Watercolour exhibition opens at the MacRobert Art Centre, University of Stirling, from 2 – 28 March, tours to Saga Gallery, London.

One-man exhibition of Paintings and Prints at Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum, from 16 – 30 August, during the Norwegian Film Festival. Participates in a group exhibition Norwegian Paintings, Sculpture and Prints, at Kunstsalon Wolfsberg, Zürich, Switzerland, from 18 November – 30 December.

 

1988

Produces 10 colour and 10 black & white lithographs to accompany Stein Mehren poems in the folio edition Jord, Liv, Himmel (Earth, Life, Sky).

 

1989

The artist Per Dahl introduces Widerberg to Per Steen Hebsgaard, owner of the internationally acclaimed glass studio in Vanløse, near Copenhagen. This marks the beginning of a highly productive and creative collaboration which results in a series of major public commissions including the stained-glass window commission for Volsdalen Church, near Ålesund on the West coast of Norway. Two paintings The Adoration and From Chaos to Cosmos are commissioned and funded by Norwegian Culture Committee. Widerberg’s 15 meter, vertical stained-glass window made up of several thousand pieces od cut glasswas sponsored by Kjell Holm The commission was completed in stages in 1991, 93, 95. One-man exhibition Paintings at Saga, Scandinavian Art, London, from 12 October to 4 November.

 

1990

Major international touring exhibition ‘Paintings 1980 – 1990’ opens at Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, from 10 March – 11 April, initiated and supported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The accompanying exhibition catalogue Frans Widerberg: Paintings 1980 – 1990, includes forwards by Arne Malmedal and Liv Morch Finborud, and an essay ‘Decisive Encounters by Åsmund Thorkildsen.

 

Publication of Frans Widerberg: Grafikk 1954 – 1990 with an essay by Hans Jakob Brun. Labyrinth Press, Oslo.

 

1991

One-man exhibition celebrating Gallery Brandstrup, Moss, 25th Anniversary, from 5 – 26 May, runs concurrently with one-man exhibition Paintings, at Gallery Brandstrup, Olso, from 4 – 26 May. One-man exhibition Paintings and Prints at Trondheim Kunstforening from 25 July to 1 September. In Germany for the opening of his exhibition Paintings 1980 – 1990 at Ulmer Museum, Ulm, from 19 October to 17 November.

 

1992

One-man exhibition Paintings at Gallery Christian Dam, Copenhagen, from 3 – 30 September. In London for the launch of his one-man exhibition at the Barbican Arts Centre, from 10 November – 13 December, as part of the Scandinavian Festival Tender is the North. Widerberg is presented to HM Queen Elizabeth and HRH Prince Philip during their tour of his exhibition at the official opening. Features in the BBC TV documentary covering the Festival. Edvard Munch’s ‘Frieze of Life’ exhibition runs concurrently at the National Gallery. In Oslo he works with Dag Hofseth on intaglio prints.

 

1993

In Denmark for completion of the commission for Volsdalen’s Church stained glass, panelled north wall is installed, with depictions of Peter, the Fisherman; Birds and The Sun, with the Cross and the resurrection in the centre, and John the Baptist and the eagle in the final panel.

 

Collaborates with sculptor son Nico and Hebsgaard on a Chapel for Ullevål Hospital, Oslo. A University Gallery exhibition Watercolours opens Newcastle upon Tyne, from 14 January – 26 February, tours to Brighton University Gallery (formerly Brighton Polytechnic Gallery), from 1 - 20 November.

 

1994

Works with Lu Daxiang, master printmaker, at the National Academy of Art, Craft and Design. One-man exhibition Paintings, Kunstnerforbundet, Oslo, from 5 February – 6 March.
